Lights, Lights, Lights! Your Festival of Lights party has to shine so be sure to play up that lighting when decorating for your party. Place a lot of different sizes and shapes of candles all around your house. Take advantage of the space on your mantels, window ledges, accent tables, buffet tables, and of course, your dining tables as well.

Décor: Think white and silver with a touch of blue (even mixing different hues). This will keep your party somewhat traditional, while adding a level of elegance, sophistication, and warmth. When we ask our clients what matters most to them when planning their wedding reception, entertainment almost always lands in the Top 3. You want to provide your guests a fabulous time and a memorable experience. But choosing the type of entertainment for your event can be a daunting task. There are a variety of options – bands, quartettes, DJ’s, choirs… and then what style/songs should be played?

Susan Criner of Gulf Coast Entertainment takes the stress out of selecting event entertainment. For over 25 years, her company has successfully planned and executed the entertainment for parties and events of all sizes.

Below, Susan explains Five Steps To Making The Perfect Band Choice For Your Wedding.

1. Call your local agent 9-12 months ahead of the wedding date. The most popular wedding bands get snapped up early so make this one of your top priorities. If you plan to marry in December, be prepared to pay a premium for your band as those precious Saturday nights are often booked for corporate parties.

2. Decide on your budget for music – don´t forget the ceremony music and DJ for the breaks! This can be a dollar range or you could decide what is the most you can spend. Be honest with your agent and let her present the best options you can afford, but not tempt you with bands completely out of range.

3. Look at all the band options in your budget presented by your agent and narrow it down to 3-4 bands. You should be able to view online a band´s photo, song list, and biography and listen to an audio sample or view a video. Ask for references. If there is a special song you are sure you want played, ask if the band would learn it. You should be able to evaluate the options pretty well in this manner, but it´s always great if you can see the band playing live.

4. Ask for opportunities to see the bands live and take along your fiancé or a friend. Introduce yourselves to the band leader on the break and tell him you are considering them for your reception – get a feeling for the band´s personality and see if it´s a good match. Keep in mind, though, that if the band is playing a date open to the public that they may dress differently, and may play a repertory that they would not play at your reception. The most professional bands know that their behavior, attitude, attire, and playlist are very different at a private party.

5. Confirm the band with your agent and look for her paperwork to outline all the details of the party. Your agent will note the name of the band, the number of performers, the date, time, location, type of event, and outline the payment terms. It should be clear who is providing the sound and lighting equipment, as well as the staging, power, break room, and any hospitality for the band. If you don´t engage a DJ to play music on the band breaks, make sure the band will provide recorded music or that you can plug in your mp3 player. Relax and know you´ve made a great choice for your big day!

But lately, the wedding videos I’ve seen are anything but traditional. Long gone are the days when a wedding videographer simply sits in the back of the church with a camera on sticks and singles out guests for personal messages to the wedding couple at the reception. Wedding videos are now at a totally new level and the best ones leave you feeling like you know the couple, have shared in their big day and are completely committed to their story– like a movie trailer. The cocktail hour at your wedding can sometimes be better than the reception meal itself! Not only are your guests ready to mix and mingle with each other after the ceremony, but most are ready to party and that means eating and drinking too!

Cocktail hours can provide a great opportunity to set up tasting stations for your guests to try a variety of different light appetizers before the main event. Anything from sushi tastings to cheese tastings, you can tickle their pallates with all sorts of fun combinations. The newest trend in tasting stations incorporates your bar and beverages. Signature cocktails are taking a backseat to this newest trend that focuses on one particular type of liquor, beer or wine and allows your guest to taste a variety of makers.

Tequila flights are a fun addition to your wedding bar where guests can sample 3-5 of your favorite anejos, reposados and silvers or a variety of bourbon or scotch tastings can also add a bit of distinction to your menu.

Come this fall, Houstonians are in for a real treat! Eloise Adams Jones, owner of Ouisie's Table, will be opening her newest venture, The Bird and The Bear, Ouisie's American Bistro, at 2810 Westheimer. Though more casual than Ouisie's Table, the restaurant is being touted as an eclectic American Bistro with a Southern flair. Lucky for us, it will feature some of our all-time favorites -- that infamous chicken fried steak and shrimp and grits - thank goodness! And on a cool day (will that ever happen again in Houston?), you can enjoy indulging in some of your favorite comfort food on the outdoor patio.

Can't wait to try the new restaurant. Coming to think of it, doesn't that just sound like the perfect new place for a bridal luncheon?

Last Call Before Fall!

Each year, Labor Day weekend signals that fall and, hopefully, cooler temperatures are just around the corner! Clothing boutiques are filled with fall fashions (although whoever said you can't wear white after Labor Day must not have lived in Houston!) and Halloween decorations are already lining the front aisles of the craft stores. But before we bid farewell to those long, hot days of summer, there's still plenty of time for one last party....Invite your favorite friends, family and neighbors to join you this weekend for one more dip in the backyard pool or throw an impromptu cocktail party! Ask everyone to wear white and decorate in all white -- white linens, white plates, white candles, white flowers -- you get the idea! Try serving this wonderful White Wine Sangria with peaches, strawberries, oranges and lemons. It's sure to do the trick!

White Wine Sangria (serves 8)

1 pt. Strawberries, cut in half lengthwise

2 oranges, sliced into 1/4" rings

2 lemons, sliced into 1/4" rings

3 peaches, cut into 8 wedges

3 bottles of dry to semi-dry white wine, such as Pinot Grigio or Chardonnay

1 liter sparkling water

Ice

Place all fruit in a large pitcher or bowl, add wine and allow to sit at room temperature for 4 to 24 hours. When ready to serve, add sparkling water and ice. Use a ladle to make sure a piece of fruit is in every serving.

Leave it to fashion trendsetter Sofia Coppola to wear a stunning lavender dress at her wedding over the weekend in Italy. Personally I think it was a beautiful choice for the stylish bride and maybe a sign of trends to come? The roster will cover all facets of cuisine and entertaining and is sure to be a treat. The spotlight guest is none other than cooking queen Paula Deen! The fashion world is all a flutter over rumors that Sarah Burton (bottom) for the House of Alexander McQueen is secretly crafting Kate Middleton's wedding gown. British fashion royalty Daphne Guinness (middle) penned a column for the Telegraph saying that a McQueen dress for Kate would be "one of the most interesting and beautiful dresses ever made." As a close friend and muse to the late McQueen, some wonder if she has insider information. British Vogue editor Alexandra Schulman is said to have advised Miss Middleton to work with Sarah Burton as well.
Who will it be? No one will really know until the big reveal on April 29. We're ready to throw a watch party complete with tea and biscuits... What about you?

I stumbled across this gem of an online shop and just had to share! Martha Stewart has called it her "favorite tiny shop for creative things": Bell'occhio in San Francisco! The store is full of unique and creative finishing touches for your wedding or special event. Now I'm dying to jaunt over to the West coast as I'm sure the storefront is even more impressive than the website! If it's bridesmaid's gifts you're searching for, they have a selection of fun yet refined earrings. (Rose Quartz and Creme de Menthe Briolette shown above) They have plenty of curiosities for the home (or event decor), as well! (Aqua and Red Boxes and Chalkboard Oilcloth Placemats) My personal favorite, however, is the vintage and specialty French ribbon. Just a teaser: faille, cotton velvet, grosgrain, linen, moire, floral, swiss cotton, cotton sateen, picot... the list goes on! (Leaf Ribbon and Frothy Rosebud Ribbon) How dreamy as a special finishing touch to your bridal bouquet!

I did a double-take when Mandy Moore (in Monique Lhuillier) was written in the caption to this photo. A mistake? No, that's her. (Or so they say.)

Best Newcomer
Fourteen year-old Hailee Steinfeld looked age appropriate, darling and thrilled to be taking part in the evening's festivities. I swoon for Marchesa in the first place...

Best Bold Choice
Not everyone will agree, but I adore the architectural details on Cate Blanchett's Givenchy Couture. The poppy yellow accent sealed the deal!

And Last but not Least... Best Film
My heart sang for Colin Firth and the crew of The King's Speech upon each win! Colin was beyond deserving (especially after last year's snub for his work in A Single Man) and I loved the film. Its historical context paired with an important lesson about humbled egos and hard work makes for a feel good film that you won't soon forget! (Better yet, it's playing at Landmark River Oaks... Grab a glass of wine at the bar then enjoy the show!)

Even the most inexperienced baker can whip up these Red Velvet Cookie Sandwiches in no time. These are always a hit!

Finish everything off with a chic pink and red table scape. This table featured on Style Me Pretty today proves that it doesn't have to be "over the top" to be gorgeous.

Whatever your "relationship status" may be, have a Happy Valentine's Day! It's a great time to reflect on all the love in your life--friends, family or otherwise.

Sunshine Smoothie

If you're anything like me, this winter weather puts your sweet tooth in overdrive. Here is a great recipe for a smoothie from one of my go-to cookbooks, Peace Meals, that will quell that craving but won't have you feeling guilty afterward!

2 cups frozen mango chunks
2 cups frozen peach slices
1 to 1 1/2 cups orange juice
6 ounces low fat yogurt
1/4 teaspoon almond extract
1/4 teaspoon cinnamon

Combine all ingredients in a blender and process until smooth. Serves 2 to 3. (*I usually use nonfat greek yogurt.)

At the KTE office, we are all waiting with bated breath for the wedding of HRH Prince William to Kate Middleton. One of the big questions on everyone's mind: Who is designing her dress?! The front runner seems to be fellow Brit Bruce Oldfield. He is a favorite of British celebrities and royalty, including Princess Diana. He is no stranger to a royal wedding, having dressed Queen Rania of Jordan for her 1993 nuptials.
